Personal:

I am 27.  Have done 33 marathons and ultras. Really trying to get in shape to get back to running the miles I want to. I love to read and worked for four years in a bookstore. I like to keep track of the books I read. Currently I work as a 6th & 7th grade history teacher at the only charter school in Berkshire County, as well as serve as the coach for the cross country team! Been experimenting as a pescatarian (eating only fish) since August 10, 2011.

Just earned my Master's Degree in Adolescent Education for Social Studies. I have the most wonderful WIFE in the entire world.. EMMA! October 16, 2010

Run when you can, walk when you have to, crawl if you must. Just never give up! - Dean Karnazes -

We are all teachers and we are all students in this sport. - Dean Karnazes -

The simple act of putting one foot in front of the other and moving forward at an accelerated rate can be one of life's greatest - and simplest - pleasures. ~Dean Karnazes

"Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny." - MK Gandhi

"The marathon mercilessly rips off the outer layers of our defenses and leaves the raw human, vulnerable and naked. It is here you get an honest glimpse into the soul of an individual. Every insecurity and character flaw is open and on display for all the world to see. No communication is ever more real, no expression ever more honest. There is nothing left to hide behind. The marathon is the great equalizer. Ever movement, every word spoken and unspoken, is radiant truth. The veil has been obliterated. These are the profound moments of human interaction that I live for." - Dean Karnazes

Day #62: 6.5 miles; 2.5 miles with the cross country team, including my main man Jon who came as the manager for the first time to official practice. I ran 4 x 400m repeats in the 1:30-1:57 range depending on what group I ran with, another lap to put cones up and down, and finally ran a lap with my man Jon. Yup. He said he hates running and doesn't run, but he RAN a full lap with me! He's my hero. I told him by the end of the season he's going to be able to run a mile non-stop and surprise everyone at this school, especially himself. I wish I could have more days like this! Then came home and ran 4 miles steady on the treadmill, lactate threshold pace with the last mile about :30 faster to kick it in. Total was 31:32 for 4 miles, or 7:51 a mile! Haven't felt this good in close to a year. Going to celebrate with a pot of coffee and some Dr. Quinn with Emmy.

Autumn smells, just sniff.
A whiff of body odor,
Oh no! Wait! That's me!

Day #63: 20.5 miles; Woke up to a text saying school was cancelled due to electrical and fire alarm issues. I made the most of it and decided to go do another access road run up Greylock. It was chilly, at 50 degrees, but my legs felt really fresh. I made it up in 96 minutes (only about 4 minutes slower than the race last week), and sat at the overlook looking down on Adams. Everything was perfect: blue skies, sunshine, birds chirping, a squirrel playing in the grass, and two 20-somethings sucking face. Oh to be on the tallest point in Massachusetts. I started to get chilly as I was thoroughly soaked in sweat, so I stopped behind the lodge, drank 2 bottles of water and refilled for the trip down, and away I went. I was absolutely flying. My legs felt amazing. I came down in the fastest time I've ever done that run, 72 minutes. Holy moly! Crazy to think I made it to the summit 3 x in 8 days and have logged 38 miles on Greylock in the same time frame. Later today I went to south county and did Monument Mountain with Emm, for 3.5 miles total. Made the most of the day off and tried not to think of all the crap I got to get done between now and 6am tomorrow. Either going to be a late night or early morning. I think I'm going to opt for early morning. Oii. Missing Borders a lot lately. Hoping the U.S. Postal Service hires soon! At about mile 15 found the sippy cup the kid threw out the window on the bus ride home from Mountain Day last Thursday. Hope the bus driver will appreciate it. It's a Playtex brand and not too messed up so hopefully still useable. (17 miles Komodos, 3.5 miles NB)

Sweaty legs of steel,
Weird looks, seeking for the truth.

Day #64: 1 measly mile. Hardest day of this challenge, not because of sore legs, but because of other health stuff. Woke up at midnight and covered in sweat. Right ear was plugged and crackling. I tried to deal with it - got up on four separate occasions with no luck. Taught all day and it felt like my head was in the deep end of the pool. So hard to understand. Had my second xc meet of the season. 19 starters. 19 finishers. A win all the way around. Finally got to school at 7pm, but was exhausted and needed to get home. I got home, had a snack and passed out on the couch, then realized at 9:20 that I had yet to run today. Dragged myself through an 8:55 mile. Now going to try to pass out again.

Others go achieve,
And I sit idly by, for
today I am sick.

Day #65: 5 miles. Feeling better. Voice is still echoing inside my head trying to get out. It's very hard to understand 6th graders in this condition. My voice is the thing going next. Trying to hold on so I can get through Friday practice and then take the weekend off. 9 days until my race and feeling pretty blah. We'll see how it goes. Ran with the cross country team easy on the bike path. I went a little hard to try to catch up to them and to get different groups in sight. Did a total of 3 miles, only about 1 mile "fast", then did 2 miles later tonight by myself at about 8:40 pace. Am going to pick up Emmy from work and then hopefully just relax a little bit. Being sick is not very much fun!

Day #66: 3 miles only, running with the xc team. Ran with the cross country team and was helping some of my boys focus on learning how to pass with authority and how to kick so that others found it hard to maintain form and position. I think a couple of them learned something. My voice sounds pretty bad and still have crackling in the ears though. Ugh! Weekend could not have come quick enough.

If ever whizzing,
Be sure to go with the wind.

Day #67: 4 miles, increasing pace. Started slow and gradually sped to finish with the last half mile sub 8 pace. Finished in 32:51, good for 8:13/ mile pace. One week from today is the mac daddy of all races in Berkshire County. Anita Ortiz will be there. Hope I don't embarrass myself too much. I am just hoping to get a nice run through the woods in. Ear still crackling. Snap. Crackle and pop! Going to sit on the couch and watch some Lord of the Rings I think for a bit. I am pretty sure that I sweat more than anyone else I know. Hydration will be the issue as it looks like some aid stations are 6 miles apart. Might have to consider carrying 2 bottles with me?

Snap, crackle, and pop!
Bones, joints, eardrums all the same.
Is this called old age?
